The power industry is undergoing its greatest transformation since its inception, and much of the change is being driven by distributed energy resources (DERs). These are generation and storage resources (e.g., solar, batteries) connected to the grid at the distribution level “downstream” from the utility substation. While DER deployments still account for only a tiny fraction of installed generation capacity, they are growing rapidly and their potential—for better and worse—is undeniable. |
