Improving smart grid ROI with distributed energy resources

The long-term objectives of the smart grid are to dramatically increase grid utilization, reliability, and efficiency; to provide customers with the means to respond to economic and environmental signals in their electricity consumption; and to help utilities thrive among the volatility of a market in which customers become suppliers too. Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) represent vital assets that allow power to be controlled and managed at the customer level; generated using local distributed capacity; locally stored; and transformed for transportation applications. >> Read More

T&D World Grid Optimization

New grid optimization resource

Maintaining the functionality of our aging electric grid requires technology beyond the current definition of smart grid. Merging technologies such as sensors, telecommunications, and distributed processing could potentially allow us to optimize grid function and customer interaction. These emerging technologies are contributing to the fast-paced smart grid revolution. T&D World provides one-stop access to the latest electric grid technology news, research, and implementation in this new grid optimization microsite. >> Read More

Battery Energy Storage

Battery energy storage aids in integration of renewables to the grid

One of the biggest challenges that utilities face is the need for energy to be produced and consumed at approximately the same rate. Because of this, many people argue that the variability in energy production from renewable energy sources will not support demand during peak time periods. The integration of renewable energy sources to the grid through the use of battery energy storage systems will reduce variability and improve reliability. Energy storage with lithium batteries is highly energy-efficient and stores energy from intermittent generating sources, such as wind and solar, and makes it available to electricity users at peak demand. >> Read More

DC Power Portal

DC power hits the high seas

Many electronic devices natively run on direct current (DC) despite the fact that power grids generally transmit alternating current (AC). The repetitive conversion between DC and AC oftentimes leads to significant power losses. Industry personnel are focusing on this conversion issue as a potential game changer in the realm of energy efficiency. The push to transmit DC took another step forward with the announcement of a ship powered by a DC grid. The switch could potentially cut power consumption by up to 20 percent! >> Read More

Energy Efficiency

Coalition finds US industry wastes way too much energy

Today the most common primary sources of energy are fossil fuels, many millions of tons of which are burned each year to generate power. Through inefficiencies, from the gathering of these energy sources to their eventual consumption, a staggering 80 percent of their potential to generate power is lost. With global energy consumption predicted to climb substantially by 2035, such high levels of inefficiency will needlessly add to the already growing carbon emissions. Estimates suggest energy efficiency improvements could deliver half the cuts in emissions needed to slow global warming. >> Read More
