 Localized storage of electricity to further national energy policy goals
Distributed energy storage (DES) systems consist of small, stationary batteries installed in neighborhoods, buildings, homes and electricity substations, which can be networked together using "smart grid" communications technology. DES systems reduce blackouts and brownouts, permit greater use of variable, renewable energy resources such as wind and solar, and help reduce dependence upon imported petroleum. While DES technology exists today, there are many barriers to deployment. A coalition of 13 leading industrial companies and electric utilities hope to change that, issuing a new white paper with six recommendations for speeding deployment of DES systems.

Real smart grid is on the grid itself, providing two-way communication and more efficient power flow across the distribution system. But what if the meter can help with that? By leveraging the convergence of distribution automation (DA) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for voltage monitoring, utilities will be able to gain additional insight from the substation down to the customer endpoint and increase operational efficiencies through voltage conservation, while extending the capabilities and advantages of AMI.
