How to make U.S. distribution systems self-healing

In the power system, a majority of faults occur in the distribution network, often resulting in the direct interruption of the supply of electricity to customers. As the smart grid evolves, utilities have deployed various types of sensors and advanced communication mechanisms. Such advances facilitate the types of outage management technologies that handle faults occurring in different locations. These technologies, which significantly enhance the self-healing capability in the distribution-level smart grid, are critical to achieve high system reliability and customer satisfaction. >> Read More

Data Centers

Data center trends

Tracking developments in the data center industry is similar to charting the development of the internet applications that rely on it. This is a field that barely existed as an industry in its own right just 20 years ago, but in the United States alone, data centers already account for 1.5% of the electricity used in a given year. Power use in data centers is doubling every five years. By 2015, data centers are expected to account for more CO2 emissions than the airline industry. New installations, like the industry itself, are increasing in size and sophistication at a staggering pace. Read more to discover the trends and best practices. >> Read More

Switchgear Service

Free air insulated switchgear assessment

When was the last time you checked your air insulated switchgear? Use this free, easy tool to give a preliminary evaluation of the condition of your medium voltage air insulated switchgear. Answer 10 condition indicator questions to evaluate the need for a deeper assessment. This tool is strongly recommended for those plants where conventional maintenance strategies are still applied and no other assessment has been performed. >> Read More

Distributed Energy Storage

Localized storage of electricity to further national energy policy goals

Distributed energy storage (DES) systems consist of small, stationary batteries installed in neighborhoods, buildings, homes and electricity substations, which can be networked together using "smart grid" communications technology. DES systems reduce blackouts and brownouts, permit greater use of variable, renewable energy resources such as wind and solar, and help reduce dependence upon imported petroleum. While DES technology exists today, there are many barriers to deployment. A coalition of 13 leading industrial companies and electric utilities hope to change that, issuing a new white paper with six recommendations for speeding deployment of DES systems. >> Read More

Smart Grid

What else can smart meters do?

Many people in smart grid argue that the smart meter is just an endpoint. Real smart grid is on the grid itself, providing two-way communication and more efficient power flow across the distribution system. But what if the meter can help with that? By leveraging the convergence of distribution automation (DA) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for voltage monitoring, utilities will be able to gain additional insight from the substation down to the customer endpoint and increase operational efficiencies through voltage conservation, while extending the capabilities and advantages of AMI. >> Read More
