ABB's Power Update

Rx for transmission networks

American Electric Power (AEP) has selected ABB's Asset Health Center solution to improve performance and reliability of its electric transmission networks in all of its transmission substations. AEP first outlined the concept in 2007 and called for development of a platform that could bring together AEP infrastructure and systems with models that turn data into information that can be used to support the decision making process. "We have been working to automate situational awareness of asset conditions for some time. We are now poised to realize valuable operating and maintenance benefits from those efforts," said Robert W. Bradish, VP for AEP grid development. >> Read more on this exciting collaboration.

Substations

We're closing in on the future

A technology junkie looks at the technological advancements shaping our electrical substation future. Advancements in software, design tools and processes are exciting, but there is real magic taking place in the electrical apparatus being deployed in the substation. The goal of the new technologies is to provide greater reliability, flexibility, availability and safety, and to do it with less human interaction. >> Read more about the advanced technology in the 21st century substations.

HVDC

HVDC: A revolution ahead

The power engineering industry is facing tremendous challenges worldwide. Countries such as China, Brazil and India have experienced a massive demand increase, which needs to be covered; North America is seeking a more reliable energy system; and in Europe, they are predominantly looking for a more sustainable energy supply, based on liberalized market principles. >> Read more

Solar

Six stages of solar bankability

Solar radiation is arguably the most plentiful source of available energy on Earth. Solar electric power generation is clean, renewable, flexible, scalable and can deploy relatively quickly to meet increasing demand. However, solar energy is not without challenges. To ensure the availability of capital for solar electric power generation, developers need to mitigate risks. >> More on how to mitigate risks
